Solid Power - Website & Branding Imagery

Strange Visuals was approached by Solid Power to develop an image library that would refresh their visual presence for their upcoming IPO. The photos were used for a website rebuild, as well as press handouts and for visuals in investor relations materials.

The Project

For this visual refresh, the goal was to build a cohesive set of imagery that could be used across multiple channels, for internal and external uses and brought a visual identity to Solid Power that emphasized their status as an innovative company at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution.

We worked with the marketing team to establish a visual direction, and coordinated further with C-Suite members, scientists and engineers to determine which part of Solid Power's innovative battery production processes we wished to highlight, while taking care to protect any sensitive intellectual property.

Challenges

Working in a functioning battery production facility was very technically challenging. Finding ways to build lighting schemes and direct talent that highlighted the impressively complex machinery while it was still in operation took a lot of pre-planning as well as shoot-day flexibility. We were able to work within those boundaries to minimize downtime and maximize visual impact.

Usage

One of the main goals for the imagery was to update Solid Power's website with dynamic and consistent visuals that will feel cohesive throughout the site. Images were made to pair with specific pages, allowing for cohesion between visuals and copy.

Press

Beyond the website redesign, another main goal was a set of images to be used as press materials. Since the company was undergoing an IPO, there was a renewed focus on publicity, and a cohesive visual identity was a cornerstone in that push.

Images were featured in Wired Magazine and the MIT Technology Review, as well as energy trade publications, BMW newsroom, The Denver Post, and various other financial and regional-specific publications.

Headshots

In the wake of the original campaign, I continued working with Solid Power to further develop their visual presence by photographing headshots for the C-Suite and many of their employees. Our headshot day consisted of more than 75 employees photographed on white backgrounds. We chose white backgrounds for their consistency and usability for many different purposes including employee badges, internal directories, and handouts and external uses.

Construction

While managing Solid Power's various photo needs, they broke ground on a new factory designed to handle their scaling to a fully capable electric vehicle battery assembly line. We coordinated with their construction manager to chronicle the journey of this site including key installations, and progress updates. This ongoing need has transitioned from bare site photographs, all the way to the installation of specialized scientific equipment, working with construction managers, crane and rigging teams and the engineers overseeing installation.

Conclusion

In the end, what was originally scheduled as a 1-day shoot at the Solid Power Headquarters turned into a multi-day image library build, headshots, construction imagery, and ongoing visual coverage of company events, updates, products and more. It has been a fantastic experience building a long-term visual history of a fast-growing company, and Strange Visuals looks forward to continuing to chronicle their journey in the years to come.
